Fire departments from four towns responded to an afternoon fire in Gilmanton yesterday that caused about $30,000 in damage to a single family home.

About 1:30 p.m., firefighters found an upstairs bedroom on fire at 51 Meetinghouse Road, home of the Williams family. The only person in the house got out safely and was standing in the road when the fire engines arrived, according to the Gilmanton Fire Department.

The fire damage was contained to the room and was brought under control in about 20 minutes, Gilmanton fire Chief K.G. Lockwood said. Smoke and water damage was sustained throughout the building.

The cause of the fire was determined to be careless disposal of smoking materials, with the structure sustaining about $30,000 in repairable damage, Lockwood said.

Thirty firefighters from Gilmanton, Belmont, Pittsfield and Barnstead responded to the call in yesterday's hot mid-day weather.
