It's all go for the Volt DETROIT. The US government ended its safety investigation into the Chevrolet Volt last week after concluding that the Volt and other electric cars don't pose a greater fire risk than petrol-powered cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began studying the Volt last June after a fire broke out in one of the cars three weeks after it was crashed as part of safety testing. Two other fires occurred later related to separate safety tests . , and

The following information was released by Colorado Senator Mark Udall: Today, Mark Udall encouraged fire departments across Colorado to apply for a competitive grant program to help them hire more firefighters and recruit and retain volunteer firefighters. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants are administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and give Colorado fire departments the chance to compete for a portion of $380 million to improve or restore their staffing and deployment capabilities.

The following information was released by the International Association of Fire Chiefs: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that the application period for the Fiscal Year (FY) SAFER grant program will open on January 30 and end at 5:00 pm (EST) on February 24. The purpose of the SAFER grant program is to assist local fire departments with staffing and deployment capabilities in order to respond to emergencies, and assure that communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. The program includes two categories: Hiring of Firefighters and the Recruitment and Retention of Volunteer Firefighters.
